Why the patent record spells my name three ways

Hemant K. Rohera, Hemant Karamchand Rohera and Hemant Rohera are one inventor, based in Pune, India, named on three granted international patent families. The three forms exist because different registers recorded the name differently at different times, and one consequence of that is worth knowing before anyone tries to verify the portfolio: the United States patent record carries two spellings, so Justia lists the work under two separate inventor pages.

All three refer to the same person. Hemant K. Rohera is the form used consistently from here on, because it is the one that carries both of the others: it contains the working form exactly, and the middle initial ties it to the records filed under the full legal name.

Why the United States record carries two spellings

The Hybrid Power Pack application entered the United States national phase in 2015 with the inventor recorded as Hemant Rohera. The two later families — the medical therapeutic device and the vehicle power generating system — were recorded as Hemant Karamchand Rohera. Both are correct; they are the short and full forms of one name, filed five years apart.

Patent databases index on the inventor string as printed. So a database that builds inventor pages automatically produces two of them, each holding part of the portfolio. That is exactly what has happened at Justia, and it is the single most common reason a search for the portfolio comes back looking smaller than it is.

  1. Search both name forms in any patent database — the full legal name and the short form. Searching only one returns part of the portfolio.
  2.
